INSPIRED BY NATURE

JULY 2012  USING WEEDS TO DESIGN FORMAL HERBACEOUS BORDERS

I have just returned home after walking for a week along local hedgerows as part of a walk following the local river. This allowed me lots of time to observe hedgerows and marvel at the plants along the way. I have seen these hedgerows start earlier with primroses then follow a succession of plants like cow parsley to July when Agrimony, Vetch, Nipplewort  etc are in their prime. It struck me that these forgotten plants are often overlooked and how would a Chelsea flower show garden with these plants be regarded.

In my mind I saw the opportunity to put my love of weeds into a design and thus help me formalise my knowledge.

VISION:

To have a formal herbaceous boarder with just weeds in. The weeds however treated as valued plants and the boarder designed for all season interest.

To collect seeds and grow plants from scratch.

To create a table of flowering span, height and growth behaviour to aid any design.
